Can my Dog Catch Fleas in the Park?

A good friend of mine recently adopted her first pet dog - a puppy from our local animal shelter. The young Labrador, whom she has christened Bertie, is a boisterous fellow who can't get enough affection and loves to play outdoors. Susie, my friend, called me last night, sounding rather upset. She told me that she'd taken Bertie to the local park for a stroll, and that when she got home, she spotted fleas running around on his fur. Susie told me that she was surprised that Bertie had caught fleas in the park, and thought it was only possible for a dog to get infested through contact with another animal.

Yes, Your Dog Can Catch Fleas In The Park
Susie, along with many other pet owners, didn't realise that fleas are potentially a big problem. More importantly she didn't know that direct contact with another animal is not needed to pass them on and thought that keeping Bertie away from other dogs was enough to protect him from fleas. There are thousands of flea species around the world, but the one the dog owners need to worry about is called Ctenocephalides canis. This type of flea prefers to feed on dogs, however, it is not unknown for them to give humans a nasty, itchy bite too. What Susie didn't understand about fleas is that they are very widespread and can even lay dormant (in the egg stage) waiting to hatch when suitable prey is nearby. In parks, recreational zones and gardens, fleas can lurk in long grasses and shrubbery, waiting to jump on unprotected pets. A single female flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day, and this means dealing with flea control is an important part of caring for your dog.

How Can I Stop My Dog From Catching Fleas In The Park?
Knowing that I have kept dogs as pets for years, Susie chose the right person to phone for flea advice. I'm going to share what I told her here, to help any other pet owners out there with this problem. My top tip to prevent dogs from catching fleas in the park is to use a pet medication made to kill any fleas that get on your pet. My preferred product for dealing with fleas is Revolution for dogs. I explained to Susie that if she applied Revolution to Bertie's skin on a regular basis, it would prevent fleas from becoming a problem. Revolution is highly effective for getting rid of fleas, but it also helps to protect dogs from ticks, heartworm and sarcoptic mange, making it an excellent all-rounder. By applying Revolution, Susie can happily take Bertie out to the park again and not worry about the dangers of fleas and other parasites.

Using Revolution for Dogs to Prevent Fleas

No matter how much we love our pets, they're not completely domesticated. That is why one needs extra caution when it comes to medicating pets. Depending on the breed, some dogs are easily agitated or turn very violent, even if it's you who's dosing them. Thankfully, Pfizer has come up with Revolution for dogs which is so practical and easy to use. Revolution for dogs is the first FDA approved pet med that, apart from fleas, covers a host of infestations such as the American dog tick, ear mites, and sarcoptic mange. Revolution for dogs come in boxes that are classified according to weight and color so it's easier to remember when purchasing.

Some medications only come in suspension or pill form, but with Revolution, you avoid the hassle of mixing the med or using special applicators to get the job done. It's probably not the first time you'll hear of a pet owner complains about how it took too much time to medicate one's own pet, or how much medicine has been wasted while struggling to pop the pill or the liquid medication into your pet's mouth. With Revolution, this is not the case at all since it comes in a tube and is so easy to apply.

Revolution for dogs is a monthly dose that is simply applied to the back of your dog's neck, which should be dried for two hours. Afterwards, your pet is free to do water related activities. With that single application of Revolution, your dog is protected for the entire month from all those pests! You don't have to worry about buying separate medications for fleas, heartworm, ticks, mites, and mange because it's all there in that one small tube of Revolution. Revolution for dogs is guaranteed to eliminate those flea infestations in a month, true, but the possibility of re-infestation can happen if your dog socializes with other pets with the bugs, or if it runs into flea infested territories. Therefore, it's better to continuously dose your dogs with Revolution even if it seems like it's already pest free.

Another advantage that should be highlighted when it comes to using Revolution for dogs is it's absolutely safe to use. Revolution for dogs has minimal side effects, such as upset stomach and possibly fur loss in the area where the medication was applied, but this are only minor reactions which disappear eventually.

Now armed with such information, you know your pet will always be protected once you choose Revolution.

Owning a Pet is Great for Kids

Many parents cringe at the thought of getting a pet for their kids because it takes a lot of commitment, responsibility and cost, such as buying pet meds like Revolution for Dogs or Revolution for Cats.

However, your child stands to learn some positive things in life if you take the considered risk of getting a pet:

1.Responsibility

Your child will develop accountability. Teach your kid minor tasks such as preparing the pet bowl at feeding time, cleaning up afterwards, or to hold the pet still when it's time to medicate, say with Revolution for Dogs, Revolution for Cats, Advantage, Canex or Heartgard. You could also teach him to store the boxes of pet meds in a cool and dry place.

2.Time Management

It teaches your kids to plan and manage time so that they will still be able to enjoy and accomplish other activities a normal child experience, such as playtime or homework. Teach them to use a calendar to remember the date to medicate or buy pet meds. For example, Revolution must be given around the same date each month to protect from fleas and heartworm. Buy a calendar that has big numbers and let your kid cross due dates with a big colorful pen because with Revolution, you can't miss a month of it, since it increases the chance of worsening the infestation.

3.Health

When medicating pets kids will value health all the more because they'll have to make sure their pet never gets sick, otherwise it may die. Teach them what the medication does, how it's used, how it's applied, and how it's stored. For instance, Revolution for Cats and Revolution for Dogs is weight-specific; it can be given to kittens and puppies over six weeks of age. Revolution is for the prevention, treatment, and control of fleas, flea eggs, ear mites, sarcoptic mites, heartworm, and additionally, with Revolution for cats, hookworms and roundworms. It's stored in a cool, dry place. Of course, adult supervision is ALWAYS required when applying medications such as Revolution but it's still necessary to show them how, so they'll know what to do on their own as they grow. This practice will influence their daily health habits such as brushing teeth, washing hands, etc.

4. Emotional well-being

Just being with some furry friend eases the stress one experiences in one's daily life. When adults are or are not available, a pet can provide relaxation and companionship. Studies suggest that getting a pet prolongs one's life. A kid can even make medicating a pet with Revolution a bonding time because there's always an excuse for a cuddle!

Does Revolution Kill Flea Eggs Too?

Many pet owners are becoming more aware about how to effectively solve their flea problems. One way is to target the flea eggs before they hatch, develop into adult fleas, and begin to multiply.

Flea eggs are white and translucent. Since they are oval and slippery, they can be scattered anywhere and everywhere. Dogs and cats are active hosts of fleas; they jump and roam and are often all over the place. The flea eggs could roll off and fall to furniture, blankets, clothes, and many areas of the house where they frequent. Good thing there is Revolution for dogs and Revolution for cats that could effectively get rid of not just adult fleas and larvae but flea eggs, too.

Many who are on the lookout for reasonably priced medications turning to Revolution because apart from treating and controlling heartworms, hookworms, roundworms, sarcoptic mites, and ear mites, Revolution for dogs and Revolution for cats treat and control flea infestation, which includes the adult fleas, the flea larvae, and their eggs.

Revolution renders the eggs ineffective due to its powerful ingredient Selamectin. Once the eggs are useless and are unable to hatch anymore, you've prevented the flea population from increasing.

Revolution for cats and Revolution for dogs is the easiest, most practical pet medication that Pfizer has created because it is just a monthly dose that you apply to your pet's back, between the shoulders, and you're done! You just have to make sure the Revolution dries for two hours before your pet engages in water related activities. However, make sure to apply this pet med on dry fur first to make sure it's really effective.

Revolution is highly recommended by veterinarians world-wide because it is effective but still gentle on your pets' systems.

It comes in convenient packaging that you could buy, good for three months, six months, and twelve months. You can actually vary the number of packs of Revolution for cats and Revolution for dogs you can buy and it won't make a huge dent in terms of budgeting. Say you bought a box of three pack Revolution for cats or Revolution for dogs, you don't have to worry about spending for the next three coming months, if money is tight. A single box will tide you over for a given period and this allows you to prepare to save for the next months without the rush.

Using Revolution since Jose was such a little puppy our worries with fleas have lessened and can proudly say, almost none. Revolution was such a reward to us pet owners hence, if you are still not using Revolution go now to your vet or go online and order Revolution. Our Jose is such a healthy dog since using Revolution.

How can Fleas Get into my House?

First of all let me give you a description of what fleas are. Fleas are parasites which are wingless that feed on the blood of any warm-blooded body more often are dogs, cats and humans. You might be wondering fleas are wingless but how come they proliferate so fast not only in your pet but to your house as well. With the powerful legs they possess, the fleas jump as high as 8 inches vertically and 16 inches horizontally. If you think you are the only one who experience such problem having fleas in your house, don't be. I can attest to that. Let me share with you our experience of the past 6 years in dealing with fleas getting inside our home.

Six years ago we had Jose which is our baby who happens to be a Shih-Tzu. Before we had Jose my husband and I were not interested about fleas and other such stuff but it was a 360 degree turn around when Jose came. One of our utmost concerns since then was to prevent fleas getting into our house since Jose stays inside the house. Fleas have existed for ages and keep on pestering homes as long as they have blood to suck to continue to exist. In addition, fleas have a 4 stages of the life cycle to be able to control them one must be able to restrict the fleas in any stage they are in. We did experience having fleas getting inside our house not because Jose has it but due to the fact that when we walk Jose in the park every weekend he mingles with the other dogs and one way or another there are a few times he was infected with fleas. That's the time we had a pet medication that stood the test of time for Jose which is called Revolution.

Let me share with you how Revolution works to prevent fleas getting into our house and most especially to our Jose. It has been Revolution since Jose was still small that kept fleas barred inside our house. Revolution bearing the chemical name Selamectin is a safe and easy to use monthly topical pet medication which shield Jose from heartworms, fleas, ticks, ear mites and sarcoptic mange. Revolution acts by infiltrating Jose's skin and bloodstream. With the Revolution active ingredient Selamectin concentrations which enters Jose tissue and bloodstream it put to a stop to heartworm disease and it spread to Jose's skin from the bloodstream which eventually kills adult fleas. Revolution is also an anthelmintic which expels parasitic worms.

Thank goodness to our vet for sharing Revolution with us because it kept our worries at a lesser level in regards with fleas. Revolution was such a heaven sent pet medication. Thus, every time we put Revolution to Jose we can proudly say Jose is totally free of fleas, ticks, ear mites, sarcoptic mange and heartworms. Lastly, as attested by most of our friends who have pets most of them uses Revolution hence, as a living testimony of its use we are highly recommending Revolution to all pet owners out there.

Heartworm Areas of the USA

Of all the parasites that your dog or cat may come into contact with, the heartworm is the one which is probably the most frightening. Heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, is a type of parasitic roundworm that is transmitted to animals, like your pet, by the bite of an infected mosquito. The mosquito itself becomes infected when it bites an animal which already has heartworm. The now infected mosquito then goes onto bite another animal and heartworm larvae is passed into that animal's bloodstream. These microscopic larvae continue to grow inside the infected animal's body, maturing into long worms which live within the heart and lung tissues. This is obviously not beneficial for your pet's well-being, causes a number of serious health problems and can eventually lead to the death of the animal. In some rare cases, heartworm has also been passed onto humans.

Heartworm in the USA

The horrible heartworm has been recognized as a threat to animals for many years, and was first reported in the United States in 1846. The heartworm parasite was originally confined to the south-eastern states of the USA, however over recent years cases of infection have spread dramatically. According to incidence maps produced by the American Heartworm Association, and based on data provided by veterinary clinics across the country, heartworm infection has now been recorded in all 50 states. Noted heartworm hotspots are within 150 miles of the Gulf and Atlantic coasts and close to the Mississippi River.

Why is the Heartworm Problem Growing in the USA?

Scientists have suggested several reasons for the spread of heartworm throughout the United States. Climate change has caused milder autumn and winter temperatures which allow mosquitoes to thrive, while the development of urban areas has created areas of stagnant water which provide a breeding ground for these flying menaces. Another significant change in human habits which has allowed heartworm to spread throughout the nation is our ability to travel further and with greater ease. Pets and wild animals which move between different areas may come into contact with infected mosquitoes, and then, take that infection wherever they go.

How to Beat Heartworm with Revolution

Fortunately, there is some good news about the heartworm problem, and that is – it's preventable and treatable. The best solution to any problem is to prevent is occurring in the first place, which is why many pet experts and veterinarians are now recommending that you use a preventative product like Revolution.
